Cadre Hospice Volunteers

Be the Person Who Shows Up When It Matters Most

Have you ever thought about volunteering?

What if a few hours a week could make someone's final days a little less lonely?

At Cadre Hospice, that's exactly what our volunteers do. No medical background required — just a willing heart and a few hours to give.

Most people who volunteer with us will tell you the same thing: they were nervous at first, and they're grateful they showed up anyway. We'll prepare you, support you, and match you with opportunities that fit your schedule and your strengths.

WHY IT MATTERS

A few hours can change everything.

No one should face the end of life without someone in their corner. When you volunteer with Cadre Hospice, you become part of a patient's circle of care — reading aloud, sharing a story, holding a hand, or simply sitting together in comfortable silence.

For patients, your presence is connection. For families, it's rest. For our clinical team, it's an extension of the care we deliver every day.

WAYS TO VOLUNTEER

Find the role that fits your life.

  • Companion visits — Spend time with a patient at home or in a care facility. Read, talk, listen, play music, share a memory.
  • Respite support — Stay with the patient so a family caregiver can rest, run errands, or take a walk.
  • Vigil volunteers — Sit at the bedside in a patient's final hours so no one is alone.
  • Veteran‑to‑veteran — Honor a fellow veteran's service through We Honor Veterans pinning ceremonies and visits.
  • Bereavement support — Send cards, make check‑in calls, and support families in the months after loss.
  • Office & outreach — Help with administrative tasks, mailings, and community events.
  • Pet therapy — Bring your certified therapy animal to brighten a patient's day.
WHAT TO EXPECT

We'll prepare you. We'll be right behind you.

Every Cadre Hospice volunteer completes free, comprehensive training before their first visit. You'll learn what hospice is (and isn't), how to be present with someone at the end of life, simple communication tools, infection control, and how to take care of yourself along the way.

And when you're out there? You're never without backup. Your volunteer coordinator and our care team are always reachable — ready to answer questions, talk through a hard visit, or simply check in. We walk with you the same way we walk with the families we serve.

We'll match you with assignments that fit your schedule, your strengths, and your comfort level. There's no pressure to do more than you can give.

Someone near you could use exactly what you have to offer.

You don't have to have it all figured out. Just take the first step — our volunteer team will walk you through the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need medical experience?

No — and most of our volunteers don't have any. We provide everything you need through our free training program before your first visit.

You'll learn what hospice is and isn't, how to be present with someone at end of life, basic communication tools, infection control, and how to take care of yourself in this work. (Consider adding specific hours here once confirmed with Cadre.)

Based on your location, schedule, interests, and any preferences you or the patient's family share. We take the match seriously — for everyone's sake.

None. Training, background checks, and TB testing are all provided at no cost to you.

That's completely okay. Many of our volunteers serve in office, outreach, bereavement, or pet therapy roles — and they're just as vital to the work we do.

You'll never be without it. Your volunteer coordinator and our care team — nurses, social workers, and chaplains — are always reachable to answer questions, debrief a hard visit, or simply check in.
