These symptoms can include serious infections like CNS lymphoma, MAC, or PML (a progressive brain disease), as well as extreme weight loss or conditions like liver or kidney failure that aren't being treated.
Hospice may also help when a person is:
- Struggling with everyday activities like bathing, walking, or eating due to weakness.
- Experiencing repeated issues such as chronic diarrhea, low protein levels in the blood (albumin below 2.5), or dementia caused by HIV.
- Facing additional challenges like heart or liver disease, drug or alcohol use, or being older than 50.
- Living with HIV that no longer responds to medications.
